NMLS Test Pass Rate: What the Numbers Mean for You
NMLS publishes test statistics for the SAFE MLO Test. As at 31 Dec 2024, the first-time pass rate was about 53%. Put plainly, close to half of the people who sit the test for the first time do not pass.
Why so many candidates fail
- Applied questions. Most items describe a loan file and ask what the rule requires. Recognizing a term is not enough.
- Dates and day counts. TRID and rescission questions hinge on which days count. A one-day error is a wrong answer.
- Math under time pressure. DTI, LTV, points, per diem interest and ARM caps all appear, with a basic calculator.
- Ethics is not common sense. The test expects specific answers on referral fees, appraiser contact and fraud escalation.
- Under-practicing the format. 120 questions in 190 minutes is about 1.6 minutes each; candidates who have never sat a full timed exam run short of time or focus.
What passing candidates do differently
They finish pre-licensing education, then spend focused time on practice questions, especially the applied ones. They review every miss until they can explain why each wrong option is wrong. They take several full timed practice exams and do not book the real test until they score comfortably above 75%.
What the pass rate does not tell you
The pass rate mixes candidates with very different preparation. Your own odds depend on how you prepare. If you can score 80% or more on full-length, timed, weighted practice exams with questions you have not seen before, you are in a strong position.
