The SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator Test (National Test with Uniform State Content) is the licensing exam every state-licensed mortgage loan originator must pass. NMLS describes it as 120 multiple-choice items, 115 of them scored, in 190 minutes, and you need 75% to pass (NMLS Testing Handbook, as at 11 Oct 2026).
NMLS reported a first-time pass rate of about 53% as at 31 Dec 2024. Roughly half of first-time candidates do not pass, which is why timed practice under real conditions matters.
