Can You Take the NMLS Test Online? The 2026 Rules
Only if you are approved for testing accommodations. Since October 1, 2024, NMLS offers online proctored testing (OPT) for the SAFE MLO Test only to candidates who qualify for testing accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Everyone else sits the test at a Prometric test center (NMLS Testing Handbook, Online Proctored Testing, checked 11 Oct 2026).
Who can test online
| Candidate | Where you test |
|---|---|
| No testing accommodations | A Prometric test center |
| Approved ADA accommodations that can be delivered online | Online proctored testing is an option, after a separate request in NMLS |
| Approved accommodations that need a test center | A Prometric test center, with the accommodations |
How to request accommodations
- Read section 5.0 Testing Accommodations in the NMLS Testing Handbook.
- Submit the Testing Accommodations Eligibility Questionnaire and the Verification Request Form through NMLS, as the handbook describes.
- If you want to test online, submit the online testing request in NMLS as well. NMLS says requests can take up to 5 business days to process.
- Wait for approval before you book. Then schedule through Prometric.
Booking a test center instead
Most candidates book a Prometric test center. You enroll in NMLS, pay the US$110 fee, and book an appointment within the enrollment window. The scheduling guide walks through each step, and the test day guide covers ID, the calculator and timing.
