SAFE MLO Test Day: What to Expect
The SAFE MLO Test is 120 questions in 190 minutes, within a 225-minute appointment that includes a tutorial and a survey (NMLS, as at 11 Oct 2026).
Before you go
- Bring one current, government-issued ID with your photo and signature; the name must match your NMLS record exactly.
- Expect a basic four-function calculator and a wipe board from the test center; personal calculators and scratch paper are not allowed.
- Arrive early; late arrival can mean losing the appointment and fee.
Timing strategy
- 190 minutes for 120 items is about 1.6 minutes each.
- Answer every question; there is no penalty for guessing.
- Flag long calculations and return to them.
- Leave 10 to 15 minutes to review flagged items.
After the test
Your score and pass/fail result appear on screen when you finish. NMLS posts the official result to your record about 72 hours later. If you passed, continue with your state license application; if not, see the retake rules.
